Alan Gough and John Townley played their Seniors match at midday today. Alan got off to a slow start and John was 4-0 up after 2 ends. Alan pulled back a 2 and a single on the next 2 ends to make it 4-3 after 4 ends. 5 shots conceded in the next 2 ends put him 4-9 down after end 6. John had the better of the next 5 ends to lead 12-5 after end 11 and things did not look good for Alan. However, he scored 6 on the last 4 ends, narrowly missing out on the chance to play the extra end and losing the match 11-12. Well done John and a good fight back Alan. Too little too late though.

There are 2 Club competition results from today.

The first is in the 91 Up between Jim Bland and Jane Ward. Honours were even after 2 ends at 10-10, but Jane edged ahead to lead 38-22 after end 6. Jim then had 4 good ends in a row to lead 55-45 after 10 ends. He got the better of the next 5 ends to lead by 83-67. Jane did not give up and shocked Jim with the full 10 points on end 16, to make it 83-77 to Jim, thus keeping her hopes alive. Jim made sure of the match, by winning end 17 by 9-1 and the match by 92-78.

The second game of the day was a Handicap match between Janet Townley and Sue Reid, with Sue giving Janet a 2 shot start. Janet scored 2 shots on the first end, but Sue scored singles on the next 3. Janet then scored 3 and Sue scored two 2's, to make it 10-10 after end 8. The lead then changed hands and it was 12-12 after 11 ends and 13-13 after 13 ends. Sue edged ahead to lead by 17-14 after 17 ends, but Janet scored 2 on end 18 to make it 16-17. Two of the next 3 ends were won by Janet and it was 20-19 to her after end 20. Just 1 to go for victory. Sue was not going to be beaten though and won the match by 21-20, with 2 shots on end 21. Congratulations to Sue and commiserations to Janet, after a hard fought match.

Last night, Shiplake travelled to Watlington for a Plomer Cup match. The weather was clear and the wind quite chilly, but remained mostly dry, which allowed the match to be played to its full length, even though it was getting a little dark by the end. It was good to welcome back Mike Lovejoy, playing his first match of the season, following a knee operation.

Playing on 5 rinks, there were some interesting results, with Shiplake winning 1 rink and drawing 2. Sadly, the overall result was a defeat for Shiplake. The best result for Shiplake was on Rink 4, where the team of Elaine Robinson, Pete Leverett and David Lloyd won by 28-13. They won 7 of the first 9 ends, to lead by 16-4, then lost 3 singles in a row to make it 16-7. Two successive 4's increased the lead to 24-7 after 14 ends and it looked to be all over. Watlington produced a shock on end 17, scoring 5, but it was too late to make a difference.

Meanwhile, on Rink 5, Wendy Cross, Jane Ward and Alan Gough battled to a 15-15 draw. Having led 10-5 after 10 ends, they only just held off a spirited comeback by Watlington, leading 15-14 after end 17 and setting up a nail biting finish. Keeping Watlington to a single on the last end was enough to secure the draw.

At the other end of the green, John Townley, Alan Myatt and Sue Reid fought out another draw on Rink 1. After end 8, they were leading 9-5 and were 15-9 ahead by end 14. However, Watlington were not prepared to accept defeat and a 3 and a 5 over the next 3 ends, to lead by 17-16 after end 17. Cue dramatic finish! Shiplake provided it, with a single on end 18 to draw the game 17-17.

This was definitely a night for strong nerves and crossed fingers.

On Sunday, July 21st Shiplake travelled to Didcot for a fixture in the Plomer Cup. In a match reduced to 4 Triples, Shiplake had a hard time of it, losing 3 of the 4 rinks and losing the match overall. A valiant effort by the Triple of Jim Bland, Sue Reid and Laurie Mowatt just failed to gain Shiplake a second winning rink. They raced to a 4-0 lead after 2 ends, but Didcot fought back and the score was 4-6 after 5 ends. Shiplake added 2 to make it 6-6 after 6 ends, but were trailing 6-12 after 10 ends. A 3 on the 11th end reduced the deficit to 9-12 and Shiplake then continued to close the gap, trailing by 13-14 after 16 ends. Didcot then scored 4 on end 17 and Shiplake replied with 3 on the final end, resulting in a narrow defeat for Shiplake, by 16-18.

The only successful rink of the afternoon was the Triple of Wendy Cross, Elaine Robinson and Neil Warley. A good start took them to 7-0 after 5 ends. Honours were even over the next 3 ends, leaving the score at 10-3. Didcot then scored a single and a 4 to reduce Shiplake's lead to 10-8 after 10 ends. The scoring was then pretty evenly shared through to the end of the match, with Shiplake emerging as winners on the rink by 16-12. Well done, Wendy et al.

On Sunday, July 21st Jane Ward played Katie Bland in the Women's Singles. Jane started well, with a 3 on the first end, but Katie fought back to level the scores at end 3, then lead by 7-3 on end 5. Jane then stepped up a gear, winning 6 ends in a row to lead 12-7 after end 11. A single on end 12 was Katie's sole interruption to Jane's progress to the Final, as she won 4 ends in succession, to reach the required 21 points.
