A busy programme this afternoon, with 3 Club competition matches played.

The first was the 2 Wood Singles match, between Elaine Robinson and Lorraine Walters. Elaine dominated the first set, winning 4 of the 7 ends played and restricting Lorraine to 3 singles. Elaine won the set 7-2. Set 2 was a completely different matter. Lorraine quickly amassed 6 of the 7 shots she needed, by winning the first 4 ends. Elaine scored a couple of singles, but went down 2-7. The match now went to the deciding set. Elaine started the set like someone who was determined to win and gained 6 of the required shots in winning the first 4 ends. A minor rally by Lorraine scored 2 singles, before Elaine delivered the coup de grace to win the third set 7-2 and the match 2 sets to one.

Before the 2 Wood Singles match had finished, the 2 Wood Pairs Semi-Final began. This match was between Sandra Gough & Sue Reid and Jane Ward & Keith Walters. A single on the first end for Sandra and Sue was answered by a 4 and a single from Jane and Keith. Successive 2's brought Sandra and Sue level at 5-5 after 5 ends. Both teams won 2 of the following 4 ends, scoring 4 shots apiece to remain level at 9-9 after end 9. It was still close 2 ends later, with Jane and Keith leading 11-10. Sandra and Sue then launched a run of 3 winning ends and established a 16-11 lead. Four shots from Jane and Keith on end 15 restored the balance and reduced the deficit to one. They now had 6 ends to play and there was nothing in it. Once again the match remained poised on a knife edge. Both teams won 2 of the following 4 ends, with Jane and Keith scoring one more shot than their opponents. The score now stood at 19-19, with 2 ends to play. Two shots from Sandra and Sue on end 20 gave them a 21-19 lead. End 21 was very tense, with Jane needing to score 2 shots from her 2 woods to take the match to an extra end. She scored with her first wood, but narrowly missed with her second, leaving Sandra and Sue to progress to the Final, where they meet John Townley and Jean Buckett.

There was now a 90 minute wait for the final match of the day, which was the Handicap Semi-Final clash between David Lloyd (3) and Alan Gough (4). A very good start from Alan, scoring 4 shots on the first end, was followed by 2 winning ends apiece and a score of 12-7 to Alan after end 6. Two shots for David and a single for Alan and it was 13-9 in Alan's favour after end 8. Three winning ends from David, scoring 8 shots, gave him the lead for the first time at 17-13. Alan replied with a single and a brace, to make it 17-16. Still nothing in it. Two shots from David on end 14 put him 2 shots away from victory, with Alan breathing down his neck. On end 15, Alan was holding 4 shots, thus giving him victory. Unfortunately, David still had one wood left and produced a wonderful take out shot, to reduce it to one. He was now 19-17 in the lead. A single from Alan and it was 19-18 to David after 16 ends. David scored a single on end 17 and was now one shot from victory. Despite a valiant effort from Alan, David just held on to 2 shots on end 18, to win 22-18 and progress to the Final. He will meet Sandra Gough or John Townley.

A visit from Woodley, in a Friendly match, tonight and a chance for Stuart Earl to make his club debut and for Callum Potter to make a welcome return to the team.

In a tight game, Woodley took home a victory, by 3 rinks to 2 and 80 shots to 68. Wins for Shiplake came on Rinks 2 and 4. On Rink 4, David Lloyd, Lorraine Walters and Mick Lovejoy had by far the best of the game, winning 5 of the first 6 ends, to lead 7-1. Two of the next 3 ends went to Woodley, who reduced Shiplake's lead to 8-5, but Shiplake dominated the rest of the game. They won 7 of the remaining 9 ends and scored an 18-8 victory.

Callum Potter, Sue Reid and Jane Ward shared the honours over the first 6 ends, just edging ahead by 4-3. A run of 4 singles put them 8-3 ahead, before Woodley got one back. The final 7 ends went Shiplake's way, scoring 7 shots and winning 5 ends, to win 15-7.

In today's first match in the Seniors competition, David Skilleter was matched with Keith Walters. Keith had a flying start, winning the first 3 ends and scoring 9 shots, before David won 3 ends of his own and put 4 on the scoreboard. David won 2 of the following 3 ends and reduced the deficit to 6-10. He only troubled the score once more, however, with Keith winning 4 of the remaining 5 ends, to win 16-7.

In the second Seniors match of the day, John Townley played Sylvia Blackmore. This game was very evenly matched in its early stages. By end 7, Sylvia was leading 7-4, having won 4 of the ends played. End 8 onwards was a vastly different story, with John winning every end and winning the match 13-7.

David Lloyd and Graham Kennedy met in the Seniors competition today. David scored 2 shots on the first end, then took a back seat as Graham won the next 6 ends and took the lead 10-2. A double by David on end 8 was matched on the next end by Graham. David strung together 3 winning ends and reduced the gap to 3 shots, at 9-12. However, the ends were running out and Graham had only to score singles on ends 13 and 14, to ensure that David couldn't win and the game finished 14-9 to Graham.

Back to Club Competitions today, with a Men's Semi-Final between John Townley, last year's runner up, and Alan Gough.

John scored 2 shots on end 1, then Alan came back with successive doubles on ends 2, 3 and 4, to lead 6-2. The tide turned back to John on ends 5, 6 and 7, with 9 shots added and an 11-6 lead. Alan responded with 3 shots on end 8 to narrow the gap to 2 shots, but John scored singles on the next 3 ends to maintain his 5 shot advantage. The game then shifted in John's favour, with Alan winning only 3 of the remaining 8 ends. Despite Alan playing some good shots, to seem as if he would take the end, John was able to take the shot with his final wood and frustrate Alan's every effort. John won the match by 23-12 and will play Pete Leverett or David Lloyd in the Final.

A friendly match against Long Crendon today, with Alan Gough stepping up as Captain for the Day. With only 4 Triples, it was a nail biting start to the afternoon, with 6 of Shiplake's 12 players ( 3 of whom had already played in the Top Club Final) en route from Headington, with an ETA of 2.30, for a game that started at 2.30.

The 5 players arrived at 2.29, so we started as soon as they had changed, forgetting about trial ends owing to the extremely hot weather. It was not a successful afternoon for Shiplake, winning only one rink and losing by 57-87.

The only winning rink was that of Barrie Jones, Lorraine Walters and Alan Gough. Barrie had a steady game at Lead and Lorraine experienced her first ever match as a number 2. It was a slow start for Shiplake, losing the first 3 ends and trailing 0-4. Shiplake then found their rhythm and won the next 6 ends, to take the lead by 9-4. The remainder of the game was dominated by Shiplake, winning 6 of the 9 ends played and finishing with a 4, to win the rink 23-9.

Today, we were away to Pangbourne in the OTL. It was a good day for us, winning 3 rinks to 2 and scoring 90 shots to 83. We also gained 10 points for the OTL, which is very handy as Pangbourne were above us in the league. We now move above them.

The best result for Shiplake was on Rink 4, with Jane Ward, David Challis and Graham Kennedy storming home by 27-8. They were never in danger, winning 7 of the first 9 ends and leading 12-4. The pattern was repeated in the second half, with 7 ends won out of 9 played and slightly more shots scored.

Next door, on Rink 3, Sandra Gough, Dave Bullock and John Townley had an amazing start, scoring two 6's and leading 17-0 after end 4. The match was more even from that point, with Pangbourne winning 3 of the following 4 ends to make it 5-19. Three winning ends by Shiplake were followed by 3 winning ends from Pangbourne and the score stood at 23-12 in Shiplake's favour after end 14.With only 4 ends to play, Pangbourne had a mighty hill to climb. They won 3 of the final 4 ends, but went one shot further behind.

The other winning rink for Shiplake was Rink 2. Janet Townley, Pete Leverett and Wendy Cross had a tough battle on their hands, losing 5 of the first 6 ends and trailing 2-8. Three winning ends, scoring 3 singles, reduced the deficit to 5-8, but Pangbourne then picked up 4 shots on the next end to make it 12-5 in their favour. Shiplake then embarked on a run of 4 winning ends and narrowed the gap at 10-12 after end 14. We were all set for a grandstand finish. Pangbourne won end 15, scoring a single shot, but Shiplake came back with a vengeance, winning the last 3 ends and scoring 8 shots, including a 5, to win the match 18-13 and secure 2 more OTL points.
